Clayton Burrell Oliver 1925-2010
This dedication is from his son Jerry, and his 2 grandsons, Tyler Oliver and Clint Oliver
Donation on behalf of Clayton B. Oliver who joined the navy at the age of 16, from Ada, Oklahoma and served on the U.S.S. Independence during WWII
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the Criswell Funeral Home in Ada to honor the life and accomplishments of Clayton Burrell Oliver and to remember him as the loving father, husband, son, brother, grandfather and uncle of so many people whose lives he enriched
Mr. Oliver died Sunday, April 18, 2010 at the Norman Veterans Center. He was born October 7, 1925 near Ada, Oklahoma to Clinton Burrell and Pearl Smith Oliver. He attended Glenwood elementary and graduated from Ada High School. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. He was married to Mary Katherine Jobe Oliver. Together they had three children. He later married Tommie Myton Lewis on May 12, 1972.
He enlisted in the U. S. Navy during World War II at the age of 16 and served during most of the War on the U.S.S. Independence. He was also stationed on the U.S.S. Tracy, the U.S.S. White Plains and the U.S.S. Casablanca. Mr. Oliver was a retired banker, having begun his career at the Fourth National Bank of Tulsa in the early 1950's. He also served at banks in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Shawnee, Oklahoma and in McAlester, Oklahoma. He received his college degree with the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin and also served as a federal bank examiner for a number of years.
Mr. Oliver was active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks (Lodge 657), where he served as Exalted Ruler and District Deputy. He also served as president of several Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs in Shawnee and McAlester.
Survivors include his wife, Tommie Oliver, of the home; two sons, Jerry Clinton Oliver, Temple, OK, and Stanford B. Oliver, Dallas, TX; a step-daughter, Martha Lewis, Norman; a step-son, Sam Lewis, Little Rock, AR; a brother, Clinton Oliver, Ada; three sisters, Wanda Murphy, Enid, Virginia Tyree, Okmulgee, and Phyllis Birchfield, Houston, TX; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Charles Burrell Oliver, and previous wife Mary Katherine Oliver, both of Oklahoma City.
